Bonarotus takes its name from a signature. When Michelangelo finished the Pieta, he carved MICHAELANGELUS BONAROTUS into the band across Mary’s chest — the only work he ever signed. The story goes that he regretted the vanity of it and never signed anything again. The name is a reminder held close: let the work be the signature.
